If you are reading this then you are probably already aware of the epidemic of parts thefts.  From bumpers to headlights and from bonnets to mirrors thefts from new Vauxhall Corsas are increasing. As vehicle security specialists Source Sounds have seen a huge increase of enquiries for a Vauxhall Corsa alarm upgrade. This is primarily down to a gang that the press are calling, “The Corsa Cannibals”.

Many owners of the new Vauxhall Corsa are targets as parts are too easily removed from the vehicle. If you are one of the lucky few to own the Limited Edition or the VXR model then we are urging you to upgrade the security as these particular models are even more sought after than the standard model.

Buying a vehicle is probably an individuals second biggest spend to buying a house, therefore Source Sounds have a solution to help prevent this crime from happening.

As a pro-active company we believe solving a problem before a problem has occurred is the best thing to do. Source Sounds professionally install an alarm that piggy backs off of the factory key-fob. This gives the user the ability to arm and dis-arm the alarm via the factory Vauxhall key-fob. Furthermore, the alarm comes with a proximity sensor which gives a loud audible warning to anyone within touching distance of the vehicle to warn them away. This then lets them know that the vehicle is armed with an alarm, which if your vehicle is parked on a driveway or in a garage it can be easily heard depending on where you are in the house. Whereas our solution cannot physically stop anyone from stealing the parts, it helps deter the criminal from carrying out the theft.

    This alarm is £374 fitted.
Additional parts may be required to protect individual components of the vehicle.

This alarm is a Thatcham Category 2 to 1 Alarm.

The above alarm is our entry level and we do better security systems that are available for the vehicle. If you would like to contact us about security upgrades on your vehicle, please click the Contact Us button below.

  • Dash Cameras in Sheffield

    Why install a Dash Cam?

    Dash Cameras in Sheffield

There is a growing industry in the motor vehicle world for Dash Cameras in Sheffield. This is due to the high number of criminals causing accidents on purpose for cash claims. Installing a dash camera in Sheffield will give the driver the peace of mind in the event of a crash. It will also record the crucial evidence of what happened following a collision. The great thing of adding a dash camera to your vehicle is “the camera never lies”

A rising number of insurance companies are now accepting camera footage as evidence of blame in the event of claims. This footage can also be used as evidence in court. Many road users are now becoming victim of the “crash for cash” scammers. The scammers are often using sneaky techniques such as disabling their brake lights so that you crash into the back of them.  For the innocent everyday driver this means an increase in cost to their policy and possibly serious damage to their vehicle. Also, on the rare occasion as a pedestrian they are running out in front of an incoming vehicle to purposely get hit. However, the camera never lies…

    Increase in Safety

Research has found that when a driver has added a dash cam to their vehicle it has made them a safer driver. Almost 25% of drivers surveyed by the RAC said that installing a dash cam has helped them improve their driving. This means there’s an added road safety benefit to having one fitted. If more of us got one there’s an argument to say that our roads would become that little bit safer. In addition, some car insurance companies are now offering discounted premiums if to policies if the driver has a dash cam installed to their vehicle.

Are you unhappy with how your BMW sounds?

If you have landed on this page then you are more than likely aware that the sound in your BMW isn’t what you hoped for. Are you unhappy with how your BMW sounds? Would you love the facility to have better, louder & higher quality sound at your disposal? Then Source Sounds in Sheffield have a solution for your needs!

After taking delivery of your new BMW you expect the vehicle to come with pretty much everything, and in a fashion, it does. How the vehicle drives on the road is fantastic, the interior is lovingly trimmed in the highest quality material that gives the driver an atmosphere that can only be described as heavenly.  However, one area that most BMW’s elude in expectation is the audio and how much quality it lacks! Poor audio quality in BMWs is far too common and Source Sounds have that specialist touch to transform your vehicle into another dimension of acoustic quality.

Source Sounds have designed many different BMW audio upgrades that we think will give the driver the solution they need. These range from a simple speaker upgrade running off the factory head unit to a full blown audio upgrade.

    Starter Audio Upgrade

are you unhappy with how your BMW sounds? Rainbow 4" component kit

This is our starter “off the shelf” option that gives your vehicle the clarity and distinction it needs. The first thing Source Sounds do with any audio upgrade in a BMW is upgrade the front door speakers.  One of the options we use is a Rainbow 4″ component kit designed specifically for the vehicle. The speakers are fitted into the vehicles OEM locations which means the factory look of the vehicle is maintained. This component kit is powered off of the original factory BMW stereo and with both doors lined with Skinz soundproofing comes in at around £379.99 fitted.

    Better Audio Upgrade

Are you unhappy with how your BMW sounds? The next level of upgrade also uses the same speakers from the starter pack and adding an amplifier. The Audison Prima AP4.9BIT 4 channel amplifier is the weapon of choice for this package. This amplifier has a built in processor to fine tune the sound for the driver. The Rainbow 4″ component kit is powered from 2 channels of the amplifier. The existing BMW under seat woofers are maintained and powered from the other 2 channels. This gives added depth to the sound without changing the woofers themselves. Again, with both doors lined with Skinz soundproofing, the cost comes in at around £1259.99 fitted.

    Best Audio Upgrade

Are you unhappy with how your BMW sounds? Rainbow 8" under seat woofers

For the next stage of a sound upgrade in BMWs, we offer a third package utilising the Rainbow BMW specific speakers. In this package, Source Sounds keep the same front door speakers from the first 2 packages.  Adding to this, we replace the under seat speakers for a pair of 8″ mid bass woofers.  An Audison AP8.9BIT 8 channel amplifier is then utilised, but bridged as a four channel for extra power. This amplifier will give 4 x 130w of power to each under seat woofer and front door to achieve a much higher standard of audio enjoyment. The front doors will also be lined with Skinz soundproofing and this upgrade comes in at around £1699.99 fitted.

    Bespoke Design

Are you unhappy with how your BMW sounds? If so, the above systems are an example of what we offer. A bespoke system can be designed to suit your needs. You will need to come down in the vehicle for us to take a look at the vehicle. This way we can get a feel for what you need and give you a solution.

Please note: for all of the upgrades above, you may require additional tweeter pods from BMW, approximately £40-£100 + VAT (vehicle dependant)

  • Elegant BMW Audio Upgrade in a BMW 4 Series

    BMW Audio Upgrade

BMW 4 Series BMW Audio Upgrade

As we all know BMWs are one of the best manufacturers to date and produce some of the best looking vehicles on the market. Also, with their mean looking body styling and excellent engine power they are very favourable over some of the lesser spec vehicles. While the exterior and the interior of the vehicle looks phenomenal, the audio is often not quite up to par. That’s where we step in with our BMW audio upgrade systems.

Keeping the look of the vehicle very standard is one of our top priorities. Many customers come to us with the proviso that the vehicle remains standard looking where nothing stands out from the ordinary and we appreciate that. If the original audio system doesn’t include tweeters we will order replacement tweeter panels from BMW. This allows us to mount the tweeters in the factory location. Once the planning and discussions are out of the way then comes the best bit, the installation.

    Installation

BMW Audio Upgrade - Tweeter Replacement

Installing the Audison Prima mid range and tweeter kit properly to the BMW 4 Series is one of the first stages to getting a better audio experience. These 2 speakers alone give a good increase in sound quality over the poor quality factory ones.  Once the speakers have been fitted the next stage is to add an amplifier which will greatly enhance the sound.

For this vehicle we used an Audison AP8.9Bit 8 channel amplifier, bridged into 4 channels for extra power.  We used this as we were also amplifying the factory under seat woofers. All our installations are done properly and we take pride in this. Consequently this may take some time but will make sure your vehicle is safe, and more importantly sounding amazing! One of the customer requests was to achieve good clarity at high volume. By using the adjustable DSP built into the Audison amplifier the customers needs were fulfilled. Using the right sized cables for the amplifier also enabled full use of the amplifiers potential.

A BMW audio upgrade of this spec would be in the region of £1300.

  • Sealed or Ported? That is the question we get asked a lot

Sealed or Ported? That is the question

The most commonly asked question we get at Source Sounds is whether a subwoofer works best sealed or ported? In our opinion there is no definitive answer to this as everyone has their own opinions and preferences. All of us here at Source Sounds in Sheffield prefer the sound of a sealed subwoofer enclosure over the sound of a ported enclosure.

Sealed or Ported? Rainbow Hammer SW250 sealed subwoofer enclosure
    Sealed Enclosures

A sealed subwoofer enclosure uses a specific volume of air for the type of subwoofer. As the woofer moves, it pulls the air forwards and backwards with no pressure loss which allows the subwoofer to reproduce the low frequencies more accurately than a ported box due to the air inside the enclosure acting like a shock absorber, allowing the subwoofer to move with more control thus giving better controlled sub bass.

    Ported Enclosures

Sealed or Ported? That is the question. Hertz EBX250 ported enclosure

A ported enclosure is something that is a little more tricky to build due to the nature of the box. For the subwoofer to perform to it’s optimum the port has to be a specific size. This includes correct measurements for the width, length and shape of the port. You can’t just stick a hole in a sealed box and turn it into a ported box. Having a ported enclosure allows the subwoofer to take advantage of the frequencies produced at the rear of the subwoofer. This reinforces the low frequency response of the subwoofer. This lower frequency response however will only sound good at whatever the tuned frequency of the port is.  This tuned frequency can be adjusted by altering the airs resistance to motion inside the port which is accomplished  by changing the length and width of the port.

In summary, ported enclosures can typically offer better low-end extension as well as greater output around the tuned frequency whereas a sealed enclosure will give a better frequency response across all frequencies with a more controlled output, which is why here at Source Sounds in Sheffield we prefer the sealed enclosure as it gives better sound quality overall than a ported subwoofer enclosure.

  • The Source Golf – Hertz SPL Monster…

Meet our Demo Van – The Source Golf

The Source Golf - Hertz SPL Monster...

Meet our demo vehicle, the Source Golf – Hertz SPL Monster… As we go through the audio system we have a total of 100, yes 100 speakers.  They are combined in Hertz Energy ESK 165 components, Hertz Energy ECX 165 coaxials, Hertz Energy ES 250 subwoofers, Hertz SPL Show SV 165mids and Hertz SPL Show ST 25 tweeters. All of these speakers, with the exception of the subs, are mounted in either a custom built fibre glass dashboard or door panels.

The Source Golf - Hertz SPL Monster...

The subs are mounted in a custom built sub box and are fitted in 6 banks of 6 subs which are highlighted with custom orange LED lighting. To power all these speakers we also have a total of 17,520 pure RMS Watts which is made up of 9 Hertz HE4 4 channel amplifiers and the SPL Monster MP 15K Unlimited which alone contributes 15,000 of those RMS watts to drive the 36 10″ subwoofers. To drive this behemoth of an audio system, there are 2x 250a alternators fastened to the engine. This has been done by using a custom fabricated bracket made from 10mm solid steel.

In the rear of the vehicle there are 6 (plus 1 under the bonnet) Kinetik HC1200 heavy duty audio batteries all linked via 0g cable to the 2 thunderous alternators. To manoeuvere the vehicle you sit on the centre section of the Hertz amps which form a seat base.

The source unit for the entire system is a Kenwood touch screen monitor. This is linked to solid state media such as an iPod or USB memory sticks. This was done as CDs were likely to skip and jump with the amount of bass the system creates. The vehicle can also be remotely operated from an iPad and via a Bluetooth receiver from an iPhone.

    Signal

The Full Range signal from this screen goes into an Audison BitOne before being split into High and Low frequencies. The high frequency range goes into 2 Audio Control Matrix line drivers before being fed into the 9 Hertz amplifiers. The lower frequency outputs through Audio Control Epicentre before reaching the monstrous MP15k amplifier.

The vehicle itself has undergone some major engineering work and custom modifications to get it where it is today. The doors have been built in house to motorise outwards and lift up. This then reveals the inside of the vehicle to the world.

The radiator has been moved from its usual home and now locates to the rear of the vehicle. This was done to house 2 huge 250a alternators that power the system, with each alternator having its own voltage regulator.

Due to the location of the amps, a custom handbrake mechanism was designed which now motorises on and off from the flick of a switch instead of the cumbersome original VW handbrake. The vehicle sports a hi-tec Clifford Thatcham category 1 alarm system to keep it fully secure.
